  • Palace of Tears

Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) is the colloquial name for the former departure hall of the Friedrichstraße station border crossing in the Mitte district of Berlin. From here, S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains ran to West Berlin, and long-distance trains traveled via West Berlin into West Germany.

The name "Palace of Tears" originated because East German citizens and their Western visitors often said their goodbyes here in tears. The former generally did not have freedom of travel to the West.
